Supporting Femili PNG in their 10th Year of Operations

Family and sexual violence in PNG is extremely complex, with up to 68% of women experiencing violence at some stage in their lives. Out of these survivors, less than 35% will seek help.

Navigating the complex care and justice systems can be difficult for survivors to do on their own. Many need support accessing safe accommodation, medical assistance, law and justice interventions, financial and vocational resources, and more. Community leaders often need training to deliver trauma-informed services; and families need education about the supports available to them.

Opening their doors in 2014, Femili PNG was established to help survivors access support from the many different service providers. Trained caseworkers work with clients to determine their personal goals – whether it be to transfer to safe accommodation, file a police report, access medical care, take out a protection order, or seek a child welfare intervention. They then assist them to achieve these goals through a series of follow-up consultations, both with the client and any relevant, complementary, service providers. Survivors are empowered to make decisions relating to their own well-being and safety, with caseworkers assisting them and advocating for their rights within the system.

Femili PNG was the first Papua New Guinean organisation to take a case management approach to supporting survivors. Since opening 10 years ago, their organisation has grown from just 7 staff in Lae to 61 staff across three locations. Services expanded to Port Moresby in 2018 under the Bel isi PNG initiative, where they also operate a safe house; and to Goroka in 2021.

In addition to providing case management assistance, Femili PNG undertakes extensive outreach to raise awareness about family and sexual violence and what help is available. They train community leaders on how to effectively support survivors in locations they can’t reach directly; and collaborate closely with other service providers to enhance their impact.

Femili PNG have now assisted over 6,700 survivors to access the care they need. With your help, we can support them to expand their impact in the next 10 years.

Giving to FemiliPNG Australia

FemiliPNG Australia was established in 2015 as an Australian support organisation for Femili PNG. We recognise that local people, communities and organisations are best placed to respond to the needs of Papua New Guinean families. That’s why we put Femili PNG at the centre of all our work – with them leading the way, and us operating in support.

FemiliPNG Australia’s focus is on providing difficult-to-source technical, project, fundraising, and financial skills to complement Femili PNG’s work. We apply all profits and income towards activities that support survivors of family and sexual violence in PNG and improve their access to services.

FemiliPNG Australia (ABN 41 706 886 372) is a registered charity with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission, and is endorsed as a Deductible Gift Recipient by the ATO. Australian donations over $2 are tax deductible.
