The Story Behind the Bean

In early 2022, we started Femili PNG Coffee with a dual mission: to raise awareness of Femili PNG’s work across Papua New Guinea and Australia, and to generate vital funds for Femili PNG’s life-saving services.

To anchor our commitment to female empowerment, we sourced our coffee directly from a cooperative of women farmers in the Western Highlands of PNG. In March 2022, a delegation including former Philanthropy Manager Paul Scott, current Femili PNG Patron and PNG High Commissioner to Australia His Excellency Mr John Ma’o Kali CMG OBE, and Femili PNG board member Stephanie Copus-Campbell visited the cooperative to meet the growers and learn firsthand about their work.

Femili PNG Coffee officially launched online in May 2022, alongside an Australian retail debut announced by His Excellency Mr John Ma’o Kali CMG OBE.

“Make your morning cup of coffee a force for good,’’ said Mr Kali. “When you buy Femili PNG coffee, you are contributing to the empowerment of women and their communities in PNG. By purchasing from female coffee farmers in PNG, we are helping women to achieve sustainable livelihoods in the coffee industry. This economic sustainability also makes it possible for women to bring about meaningful, long-term change and development in their communities.”

The distinctive Femili PNG Coffee label features the silhouette of a women carrying a baby in a bilum, the artwork honours the central theme that women are the backbone of PNG. The artwork was created by renowned PNG artist, Lesley Wengembo, originally from the Southern Highlands.

Now years later, Femili PNG Coffee continues to serve as an impactful platform for raising awareness and supporting women across PNG.

3 Ways to Celebrate International Coffee Day

  1. Try a new coffee. Step outside your routine and explore something new. Whether you transition to a smooth cold brew, a creamy latte, or sample a new single-origin bean, Femili PNG Coffee is an exceptional place to start. It features a full-bodied flavour profile with rich chocolate and vibrant citrus undertones.
  2. Support your local roaster. Skip the corporate chains and support independent local businesses. If you are in Canberra, visit the Niugini Arabica café. Niugini Arabica roasts Femili PNG Coffee to order—they are specialists in Papua New Guinean beans and were named the 2022 Best Specialty Coffee Roaster in the ACT.
  3. Drink coffee for a cause. Next time you reach for the bag in your kitchen, consider: is your daily cup making a positive impact? By choosing Femili PNG Coffee, your routine directly supports a vital mission—funding life-saving services for survivors of family and sexual violence in PNG.

Coffee has a unique power to bring people together – whether it’s catching up with friends, connecting with colleagues, or enjoying a quiet moment of focus before the day begins.
